Ranker’s Top 5 Super Bowls of All Time

It’s still too early to say who will make it to the 2020-2021 NFL championship, but as fans gear up for Super Bowl LV, they’ve been biding their time ranking the greatest Big Games in history. We took a look at the results on our list of The Best Super Bowls in History, which has nearly 9,000 votes, to determine how football fans like you rank football’s greatest championship games. Here’s what they said:

#1: Super Bowl XIII: Steelers vs. Cowboys

The 1979 Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Cowboys are both regarded today among the greatest teams in NFL history, and at the time, fans were excited for what was expected to be an incredible game between two evenly-matched teams. Viewers were not disappointed: this rematch between the finalists of Super Bowl X was a nail-biter that resulted in five Super Bowl records being set.

#2: Super Bowl XLIII: Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Arizona Cardinals

Another dramatic Steelers victory, Super Bowl XLIII is best known for Pittsburgh’s game-winning drive in the match’s final minutes. Ben Roethlisberger successfully pushed through Arizona’s defense and threw a perfectly precise pass to receiver Santonio Holmes with only 35 seconds on the clock, erasing the brief lead Larry Fitzgerald had won for Arizona with a 64-yard end zone run.

#3: Super Bowl XLII: New York Giants vs. New England Patriots

Widely regarded as the biggest upset in NFL history, this 2008 championship game saw the Giants stop the undefeated Patriots from becoming the second team to go from the start of the regular season up until the Super Bowl without a loss. New York’s defense did what many considered to be impossible by holding Tom Brady to just 14 points, while Giants quarterback Eli Manning cemented his place in history with an MVP performance. Receiver David Tyree scored the game-winning touchdown by pinning the football to his helmet in an awe-inspiring play that is now known simply as “The Catch.”

#4: Super Bowl X: Dallas Cowboys vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

The prequel to Super Bowl XIII, Super Bowl X pitted the Steelers’ “Steel Curtain” defense against the Cowboys’ storied running game. Featuring hall-of-famers like Lynn Swann, Terry Bradshaw, Cliff Harris, and Roger Staubach, this game made the Steelers the third team in NFL history to win back-to-back championships.

#5: Super Bowl XLIX: New England Patriots vs. Seattle Seahawks

This 2015 matchup kept NFL fans everywhere on the edges of their respective seats — the defending champion Seahawks and the Patriots returned blows again and again, eventually resulting in a 28-24 Patriots victory. It was the first Super Bowl win in ten years for Brady’s Patriots, who would go on to win two more titles over the next four years.
