Diving Into Mythic Quest

Now back for a second season on Apple TV+, Mythic Quest is solidifying its status as one of the breakout comedies of the new decade. The show stars Rob McElhenney as the creator of a massively popular video game, Charlotte Nicdao as its lead engineer, and F. Murray Abraham as the game’s head writer. Mythic Quest was definitely designed to appeal to millennial viewers who were raised on video games, but it has appeal for anyone who’s ever contended with the advantages and disadvantages of modern white-collar work, with all its beanbag chairs, work-from-home policies, and poorly executed diversity initiatives.

To celebrate the release of the show’s second season, Ranker Insights is taking a deep dive into Mythic Quest’s audience to see what it is about the show that makes them love it, as well as the other shows they’re more likely to enjoy. Here’s what we know about what’s driving Mythic Quest’s fan base.

Mythic Quest on Ranker

Mythic Quest is ranked the #2 Best New TV Comedy Series Of 2020, beating out highly anticipated shows like Netflix’s Space Force and surprise hits like Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist. This indicates that Mythic Quest is even better than Ranker readers expected before the show premiered, given that it’s ranked #11 on our list of The Most Anticipated New Shows Of 2020 (voting on shows, movies, and games in these “Most Anticipated” lists is locked once the content in question is released). On top of that, Mythic Quest is #12 on The Best 2020 Original Streaming Platform Shows, #22 on The Best Current Shows That Deal With Millennial Stuff, and #28 on The Funniest Shows On TV Right Now, a highly competitive list featuring nearly 50,000 votes from over 15,000 voters.

Who’s Watching Mythic Quest?

Obviously, the answer to this question is “a lot of people,” given that it’s a critically beloved, generally popular show with A-list talent from both the comedic and dramatic side of the entertainment world. But shows like these owe their popularity to all kinds of different TV viewers and demographics. The better the producers of those shows understand their audience, the better equipped they’ll be to expand it. Using data from Ranker Insights, we’ve divided the Mythic Quest fan base into a few subgroups, all of which intersect with one another.

APPLE TV+ SUBSCRIBERS

Unsurprisingly, we’re seeing the strongest correlation with these shows. Apple TV+ has a robust content library and is rapidly picking up users, but it’s fair to say that it hasn’t quite picked up the same kind of massive user base that services like Netflix and Hulu have spent years building. So those who have already subscribed to Apple’s premium streaming service are easier to spot in Insights simply because fewer people have seen its original content.

IT’S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA FANS

Given that Mythic Quest was created by It’s Always Sunny alums Charlie Day, Rob McElhenney, and writer/executive producer Megan Ganz, a huge portion of the show’s appeal to new viewers is likely its connection to this mega-popular sitcom. That theory is supported by the fact that other shows starring It’s Always Sunny actors are also popular among fans of Mythic Quest, as well as shows that are especially popular with the It’s Always Sunny fan base. Insights says that the Comedy Central shows Reno 911! and Workaholics are uniquely popular with fans of both these comedy shows.

NERDS!

Believe us, we mean it in the most affectionate way possible. Mythic Quest is a show about video game development, after all, which is why it’s on lists like The Best Current Shows For Nerds, where self-identified techies, sci-fi geeks, and all other manner of nerds pick their favorite shows on and off the air. It also explains why so many of the shows that appear on those lists are popular among fans of Mythic Quest.
