Diving Into Ted Lasso

A classic fish-out-of-water story about sports, mentorship, and transatlantic confusion arising from our different understandings of the word “football,” Ted Lasso is one of the first breakout comedies of the new decade. Jason Sudeikis stars as the eponymous Mr. Lasso, a college football coach who is unexpectedly hired to coach an English soccer team. Much like its main character, Ted Lasso is folksy and brilliant at the same time, finding success by resisting negativity and cynicism and embracing the humanity of its characters.

The Warner Bros.-produced series on Apple TV+ has won a ton of praise from critics, Peabody and WGA awards, and a Golden Globe for star Jason Sudeikis. It’s won over a dedicated and diverse fanbase, with some viewers tuning in for its focus on football, others for its SNL-alum star, and still others preferring the show’s “unrelenting optimism” and charming characters.

As fans greedily binge the sophomore season of Ted Lasso, Ranker Insights is taking a look at who exactly is cheering for the Apple TV+ series, using our data to pull info about the viewers and learn about their other interests.

The second season of Ted Lasso premiered on July 23, 2021.

Drawing fans from all genres of TV, including comedy, drama, and horror, Ted Lasso appeals to all manner of TV fans. Here are a few of the different audiences this show attracts.

FANS OF COMEDY (WITH A HEART)

Everybody who watches TV has a few favorite comedy shows, whether they’re sketch-driven, sit-coms, or dramedies. But the comedies most beloved by fans of Ted Lasso tend to be driven as much by lovable characters and upbeat storylines as they are by punchlines and recurring gags. Take the mother-daughter duo in Gilmore Girls, the best friends of The Kominsky Method, or the progressively more loving family of The Righteous Gemstones as examples — and the much less sentimental Curb Your Enthusiasm as the exception that proves the rule.

GRIPPING PRESTIGE DRAMA FANS

When fans of Ted Lasso are watching dramas instead of comedies, they’re no longer looking for upbeat, feel-good stories. They’re looking for gripping, thrilling, and sometimes even violent programming to satisfy their need for quality writing, engaging narratives, and unique characters. All these qualities are exemplified by HBO’s The Flight Attendant, a series about a woman who wakes up beside a dead body and must solve the murder before she’s framed for it. They’re also present in Watchmen, the sequel to the classic 1986 DC comic book series, and in Big Little Lies, a thriller centered around a murder that takes place in a wealthy California suburb.

THOSE WHO LOVE INNOVATIVE GENRE-BUSTERS

Prestige TV viewers that they are, fans of Ted Lasso have an appreciation for TV shows that challenge the rules. When it comes to horror, they’re big fans of Lovecraft Country, HBO’s anthology series set in the Jim Crow era that sees its main characters facing off against horrible monsters and real-life racism across the United States. The show has won praise for the way its nuanced approach to horror, simultaneously paying homage to and challenging the work of H.P. Lovecraft. Similarly, the Western that fans of Ted Lasso love most is Longmire, a long-running series about a sheriff in Wyoming — Longmire deftly blends the procedural cop drama with all the tropes of classic Western films.
