Since the release of the original game for PlayStation 2 almost 20 years ago, Ratchet & Clank has become a full-blown pop culture phenomenon. Developer Insomniac Games has released 10 Ratchet & Clank titles, including the “reimagining” of the original action platformer released for the PS4 in 2016. The PlayStation 5 will see its first Ratchet & Clank release in June 2021. Called Rift Apart, this new game is a standalone adventure that’s sure to both re-engage longtime fans of the series and appeal to newcomers.

We’re celebrating the return of this classic third-person shooter by taking a look at how Ratchet & Clank ranks on some of our most popular lists — as well as the tastes and preferences of the game’s biggest fans.

It’s clear that the Ratchet & Clank series is hugely popular among PlayStation gamers. The 2016 reimagining is ranked #2 overall on our list of The Best PlayStation 4 Platform Games and #10 on our Best PlayStation 4 Action Games list. The original 2002 release, meanwhile, is #14 on the list of The Best PlayStation 2 Shooter Games, followed closely by the franchise’s third installment Up Your Arsenal at #23. Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time is #5 on The Best PS5 Adventure Games Of All Time, and the franchise as a whole is ranked a respectable #42 out of 178 on The Best Video Game Franchises Of All Time, a list with over 240K votes.

As far as the ranking of The Best Ratchet & Clank Games goes, the original game is actually #5 overall — the top choice for fans of the franchise is Up Your Arsenal, followed by A Crack in Time, the 2003 sequel Going Commando, and 2007’s Tools of Destruction. Franchise spinoffs, mobile, and short games are at the other end of the list, with Full Frontal Assault sitting at the very bottom. The least popular of the standard series is Into the Nexus, the final chapter in the Future trilogy and the last original Ratchet and Clank game to be released before the 2016 reimagining.
