“Alexa, what was the best movie of 2019?”

If you have Amazon’s AI-powered voice service Alexa in your home, you know just how handy it can be in answering your questions, whether you’re wondering what the score of the big game was last night, what movies are playing at your local theater today, or what the weather will be like tomorrow. But some questions are tougher to answer than others, particularly subjective ones like, “who is the greatest LA Laker of all time,” or, “who is the most famous rapper in the world right now?” That’s why Alexa has started to use fan-powered rankings from Ranker.com to answer even more of the “Top 10,” “Best of,” and “G.O.A.T.” questions users ask every day.

When you ask a subjective question like “what’s the best reality show on the air right now,” Alexa can now leverage information from Ranker, which collects all the thousands of potential answers to this question and turn it into a quick, simple answer that’s helpful to the user.

People have been coming to Ranker for almost ten years to vote on hundreds of thousands of lists and voice their opinions on film, sports, TV, music, and virtually everything else. And we’re not just saying this to brag about it — because we have over a billion votes on subjects across so many topics, Ranker is an authoritative source on what the opinions of real fans are across the country. Now, Alexa users can quickly find out which current reality show is most popular among everyday TV viewers.

Alexa won’t just be offering Ranker answers to questions about TV. Consumers with Alexa-enabled devices like the Amazon Echo, Echo Show, Echo Dot, or the Alexa mobile app can ask for rankings in categories like TV, film, music, consumer brands, food and dining, history, and sports. For example, a user can simply ask, “Alexa…”

  • “What are the best albums that didn’t win a Grammy?”

  • “Who are the greatest shooting guards in NBA history?”

  • “What are the top surfing lifestyle brands?”

  • “What are the best things to put in Ramen?”

  • “What are the best ice cream toppings?”

  • “What are the best horror movie remakes?”

As adoption of voice-powered services like Alexa continues to grow, the way we use them starts to evolve. We find new and interesting questions we wouldn’t have thought to ask before. Alexa is always getting smarter and continuing to evolve alongside customers — and Ranker is proud to be a part of that effort.
